YESTERDAY, THERE WAS outcry after an army officer was spotted on his phone in the middle of the 1916 commemorations.

After a significant amount of chatter on Twitter a spokesperson for the Defence Forces confirmed to the Irish Independent that the man was an army press officer, and was simply doing his job at the time.
Now, these photos of the same officer kneeling to speak to Sheila O’Leary (whose father and mother both fought in the Rising) are being shared widely:

O’Leary’s parents were Thomas Byrne and Lucy Agnes Smyth, who were both in the GPO during the rebellion – she was pictured holding her father’s medals as she waited for the centenary commemorations to begin.
